Apply for NISS and SNS in Portugal
Once you live, work or settle in Portugal for the longer term, two numbers often appear after the NIF: the NISS social security number and the SNS healthcare user number.
Both topics look simple on paper. In practice, they depend on documents, residence status, address, work situation and the office involved. We help you understand the requirements, prepare the documents and submit the applications within the permitted framework.
NISS and SNS - the difference
NISS: the Número de Identificação da Segurança Social is the Portuguese social security number. It is needed, among other things, for employment, self-employment and social security matters.
SNS: the Número de Utente do Serviço Nacional de Saúde is the user number for the Portuguese public health service. It is relevant for health centres, GP allocation, appointments and SNS services.
What we do for you
- We check which documents are relevant in your case.
- We help complete and submit applications where organisationally permitted.
- We accompany you to appointments where personal attendance is useful or required.
- We explain what the documents you receive mean and which step comes next.
Realistic expectations
An SNS number does not automatically mean that a named GP will be available immediately. Waiting times can occur, especially in the Algarve. We can support the formal route, but we cannot promise priority medical allocation.
Clarify social security and healthcare registration
We first check which application actually makes sense in your situation.
